The song / Official Video for "Bad Shape" (in this case I cannot divorce them from each other) by the complexly artistic Nashville singer-songwriter Jessica Breanne (The Electric Hearts) collaborating with director Kevin Doyle is a marvelous, albeit deadly marriage. In it's totality, this amazingly filmic piece of work, like something directed by Sebastián Lelio (if he was working with Blumhouse) is a period piece (guessing 1860's-ish), that feels like a creepy horror tale, a gothic noir imaging where (while not giving it away) the monster is dealt with in the end.
The song bends and distorts along the way, a mixture of doo wop punk, alt country and psychedelic garden rock. Jessica's has a unique vocal countenance, a husky drawl with a throat that sound's like it has been cured with cigarettes and whiskey. The atmosphere that curls around her voice commands you to listen, to lean in and director Doyle's deft hand with the dark story (that he conceived) features a lot of lost souls, maybe ghosts, maybe the alive that are really dead and maybe the dead that are really alive. I am taken aback at the special effects that were used in such a subtle way.
Of the project, the song, the short film, Jessica shares:
"Bad Shape originally began as a short story that naturally evolved into the song. My friend Kevin Doyle heard the song and used his brilliant imagination to come up with his own storyline and ran with it. Kevin learned quite a lot during the process of making this video including CGI effects, 3D printing and more. We filmed this in October of 2021 with the help of a lot of great friends."
