Nameless Ghost and the moving melancholia of "Hailstorm"

"hailstorm is watching me, flashing a grin of broken glass teeth...."

Maybe nothing can be as ominous as nature. Stir in a sense of the supernatural and that feeling might ratchet up to terrifying. The glacial angst of "Hailstorm" by Nameless Ghost, the indie rock project of Toronto singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Dave Coleman and from his recently released 2022 debut album "Under The Surface", conjures up what might be a supernatural malevolence or maybe just inner demons.

 Of the song Coleman shares:

"I wrote this song during a literal hailstorm in Toronto. It was a fairly bad storm and I imagined being outside and just being taken over by it and slowly succumbing, but then in the end being alright with it. There's a tremolo-picked acoustic guitar mixed in there that is meant to sound cold, kinda like shivering."

The steady rolling cadence like a dead man walking, the ever so somber vocals aesthetic, and the brooding nature that erupts into wailing, screaming guitars makes for a darkly drawn ride, human nature being as it is.

"Under The Surface" was recorded and mixed entirely by Dave Coleman at Shut Inn Studio, and mastered by Todd Tobias (Guided By Voices, Kramies).
