The Chicken Wheel, Begging for your Support and my Experimental Radiohead Cover Fundraiser

"you are all I need..."

It is that special time that I get down on my knees and hold up an empty bowl and beg for soup or scraps of meat on a London street corner like Oliver Twist or some other poor dirty faced artful dodger. If I have my literary characters confused I apologize. But before I convince you to click on the Chicken Wheel below in order that I can spend enough time on American Pancake to make a difference in a whole lot of artists lives (or at least try to) I will tell you about a musical experiment from a long time ago.

While I can't remember why I decided to cover Radiohead's "All I Need", you probably already know that Radiohead and all of Thom Yorke's musical incarnations are close to my soul. The man had his collaborators can do no wrong and I love the fact that from the beginning they were shape shifting evolving all the while, losing their tails and walking upright and then flying around. So, some time long ago at a time when I only had my vintage Guild acoustic and nothing else to play, I got it in my head that it would be fun to do a version of "All I Need" with only my guitar, voice and what I had around the house. It was a fun little mission.

I was living in La Habra, California at the time and working in Monrovia. I had been having a love / hate relationship with making music for decades it seemed. I had just received a nifty zoom stereo hand held recorder and this experiment seemed like a good excuse for playing with this new toy. As usual, I did it the hard way. Instead of recording directly onto a Daws program, I basically recorded a scratch track then played it, monitored on headphones and started laying down tracks as mov files. Of course, this is a crude way to multi-track because each track is not synced up- I did that by ear. The tracks include a desk beat- me using a thick wood desk for the beat. Also street sounds, a tea pot hissing and the ring of a metal lid of a cooking pot- that you can hear at the very end my finger flicking the thin metal edge. No bass or synth used, all one acoustic guitar playing all the parts. This was an experiment of sorts to see how the zoom wood perform as a track recorder as opposed to a field recorder which I usually use it for- enjoy---

Now that I have embarrassed myself sufficiently, I hope you will click on the chicken wheel below- It will take you to my GO FUND ME. I started American Pancake in 2009 and have had the pleasure of reviewing indie artists as well as social sharing those who are really special but maybe didn't inspire a review. I have been told throughout the years that American Pancake makes a difference. I hope that is true. This music blog takes a whole lot of time and any donation is extremely appreciated. PLEASE HELP.

Thanks so much,

Robb Donker Curtius
