The Polychromatics and the dreamy psychedelic heavy metal classicalism of "Emily, If She Be There..." (Official Music Video)

"when you're down and out, you can't be found..."

There are not many songs that make me think of such disparate musical artists from different eras like Christopher Cross / Pink Floyd (70's) to Queensrÿche / Vanden Plas (90's circa) to Black Mountain / Portugal The Man (2000's) but while listening to "Emily, If She Be There..." I did just that. My experience / introduction to The Polychromatics from Philadelphia was further elevated because the listening experience was within their trippy Official Music Video. You definitely get the sense that these guys are inspired by 60's and 70's psych rock primarily but you can hear them stir in indie rock and heavy metal tones in equal doses.

Tonally, the song has an elegant presence as it runs through dreamy, mellow psych / space rock narratives, eventually erupting in something feeling like a collision of heavy metal and stoner rock (my favorite part).

[Based just outside of West Philadelphia, The Polychromatics feature a sonic palette that is heavily laden with psychedelia and incorporates elements of rock, jazz, and funk. The quintet - featuring vocalist Jordan Schreiber, guitarists John McKenna and Isaac Goad, bassist Gisli, and drummer Jimmy Arvan - forge their musical styling's from a wide range of influences. They have recently added Cory Beaver on drums and released an EP entitled, "Sequences From The Punch Dimension" in March 2022.]
