Ultimately Fruitless and the vast post punk urgency of "Paces" from the "Horrors" Album

"it's something universal, it's something universal..."

From the thick textured tactile bass line, to the ramping up guitar feedback and staccato noted rhythms and shifting beats, "Paces" by Chicago's post punk / indie rock outfit Ultimately Fruitless has 80's, 90's atmospheres. The vocal countenance, strong, stoic and self reflective adds to the allure and nostalgia. Within the dark emotionality and sinewy musicality I feel the same sonic nucleic acid of bands like Interpol and Joy Division. High praise, indeed.

"Paces" is from the bands 2022 sophomore full length "Horrors". From the self winding, puzzle piece hard synergy of "Spider Monkey" (love this) to the unrelenting heavy punk hammer of "Sparkle Motion" (holy shit!) to the brooding dark punk disco of "This Place is Haunted" (a lovely surprise) to the dreamy fever sweat of "No Thank You" AND to the surf punk "heavier than hell" tango of "Happy Healthy" this album lives up to it's name. "Horrors" is sonically rich post punk mayhem at it's finest.

Chicago's Ultimately Fruitless makes weirdo rock music, bouncing effortlessly between punk aggression and mellow, mathy melodies.

Horrors, their second, upcoming full-length release, follows 2020's Questions & Impulses with sharper edges and more experimental quirks while keeping the hooks accessible. Self-recorded and produced, the trio plays with unconventional song structures, earworm riffs and noise galore. The guitars scrape, the drums pummel and the bass grooves. What more do you need?
