TOVE and the artful post indie rock illumination of "Pretty Sequence"

"Qui vive in the polar night? / Cue the background noise from an old TV / My heed is a satellite / Hold your horses babe, you're gaining speed..."

With one of the most cool, engaging bass lines I have heard in a long time, the slippery magnetism of "Pretty Sequence" by Sweden bred / Romania based Tove might attach itself to your brain like it has mine. Propelled by a solid steady beat, the aforementioned bass, electric guitar string scratches and Tove's whispery mysterious vox containing mysterious words, there is so much to like, love, crush on.

"Qui vive in the polar night? / Cue the background noise from an old TV / My heed is a satellite / Hold your horses babe, you're gaining speed // There's a sequence / Playing over my head / Every time you pass by / It happens pretty frequently..."

I love lyrics that don't just come right out and say what they mean. Tove utters puzzle pieces instead, roller coaster, upside down poetry to be absorbed and figured out. In this way, it could mean a thousand things to a thousand people and I like that. There are some wonderful sonic diversions here too that have the wonky maneuvers and odd shapes of (let's say) Radiohead-ish artists and I love that as well. Because of Tove's candid press notey stuff, I suppose we don't have to guess what inspired "Pretty Sequence" and it certainly wasn't what I would of thought:

About "Pretty Sequence", artist TOVE shares:

Imagine having a partner who pushes you aside at parties to try to sleep with other people. And it happens so much, so often that you could feel a cartoonish thought bubble showing over your head, a display of the daydream you have about a secret wish that the partner actually cheats on you, so that they no longer can gaslight you into thinking you're just selfish and jealous, and so that you have a real reason to leave them behind and move alone into the woods instead. This is Pretty Sequence <3

Those candid press notes feel like a splash of cold water, a serious fucked up situation and one of those artful reminders how many assholes there are out there to navigate around or bury. Anyway, absolutely dig this track and the sonic surprises it has to offer.

"So long, violet violence / Monomaniac / After hours jazz / Full on radio silence / Northern lights, brown bear / Soft as August air..."
