Nicholas Walmer and the alt pop sideways beauty of "Way Out"

"saw a plane crash today..."

On the translucent and transitory "Way Out" Fort Wayne, Indiana based singer-songwriter Nicholas Walmer feels "guilty for things that happen beyond his control", at least he reveals that is what the song is about. Sonically, it is beautiful, has a pushed tension / urgency and feels sad in a self reflective sort of way. It is as him Nicholas is staring in the mirror so long until everything is his fault. Now you could easily stare in the mirror and think "that guy is great" but then I don't know which over-riding feeling would be more pathetic.

There is something endearing and funny about feeling guilty for things that you have no control over, like white privilege or being the only survivor in a plane crash. And as I make light of it, that heavy, soul killing feeling of guilt, of self hate and confusion are real feelings.

I like the sideways parts of "Way Out" - the cut and dry compartmentalization. I like how Nicholas sings "saw a plane crash today, no one dies so it's ok" as if not to consider the maiming (blinding, loss of limbs, PTSD) of such a horrific happening. On one hand, the thought process feels steeped in sadness and how deep sadness actually limits, mutes empathy and on the other hand, fuck, maybe the simplicity of that lyric is drenching with hopefulness and survivorship.

"Way Out" is from Nicholas Walmer's new EP "Japanese Roses" and all the songs have something special embedded in their thoughts and sounds. Check it out.
