T. G. Shand and the shoegazy dream pop fuel of "Fatwood"

"Studded echo and lines like / Wick in whisky the firesteel / We get to strike it like..."

Listen to the curious "Fatwood" by T.G. Shand, the shoegazey dream-pop project by Annemarie Duff from Ōtautahi Christchurch / New Zealand, at a comfortable sort of chill volume and you might find yourself swaying to the dense shifting, wonky sounds that vacillate between art punk heaviness and illusory shoegaze indie tones and as you sway you might find yourself picking at the sideways poetry. Listen to "Fatwood" cranked up loud and you might just get lost in the surreal atmospheres and you might even experience a sort of cool anger, the distortions bubbling up angst in your head.

Maybe I am weird but that is what I sensed and maybe the odd lyrics (to me) helped me feel these things because when I am lost in the vagueness of art that I might not understand I almost always experience some sort of cool anger.

"Fatwood" is based on a fire starter that was given to Annemarie by a friend who made it and as press notes reveal "it started as a joke track and turned into a mischievous vehicle for the explosive potential in quiet rage".

"I was trying to work on the EP tracks, but had this beat in my head after a very happy weekend. Had some pretty lame lyrics I was humming over it, and then my friend made me a fire starter(!). And there were all these words like "FATWOOD" and "firesteel" and "ferro rod". At some point summer got a bit weird, and I got ragey enough to finish that outtro through gritted teeth. So it just became this angry play on fire starter words... lol. It's a bit chaotic but hey I think it suits it, and I'm quite proud of the beat."

Digging this loud and at medium volume.

Described most often as “dreamy”, T. G. Shand is a shoegazey dream-pop project by Annemarie Duff, Ōtautahi Christchurch, New Zealand.

For lovers of “lush, twangy guitar-pop”, these tracks are beats driven, influenced by the early 90’s scene and lo-fi hip-hop production.
“...an immersive and dreamy soundscape with a shoegaze sheen and a dream pop glimmer. It is absolutely fantastic.”
