Under The Rug and the curious / stunning moments of "Turkey Vulture" (Official Video)

"there's a murmur in my heart..."

If you have the urge to be a singer-songwriter or to command / lead a band it is very helpful to have a pleasing, even compelling voice. Casey Dayan of the Austin, Texas indie folk rock band Under the Rug has a great voice and, more importantly, perfect for the genre they are exploring. Listening to "Turkey Vulture", right away I started remembering those large scary winged creatures that used to pick away at the deer carcasses that littered the Georgia roads that lead to our house (while we lived there) and also, right away I started crushing on Dayan's vocal countenance that has warmth, laced with sadness and just the right amount of smarts and smart ass-ness (I mean that in the best possible way). Later in the song he also shows that he can wail in an emotive way.

Apart from Casey, the rest of the song and all players involved are pretty amazing. The sounds here are gracefully put together by those responsible for that kind of thing. The production has nuance, fucking nuance and I swear to God that is not all that common these days.

"Turkey Vulture" is from the band's third full length album "Homesick For Another World" recorded in Los Angeles, produced by Oak House Recording owner and David Fridmann understudy David Peters (Blake Mills, Empress Of). The sonics here are killer, just listen to the drum sounds (an easy sound to mess up). The lyrics are interesting, curious, lovely, bruised, acerbic and the song (for me) has a wonderful sort of late 70's broad pop / garden rock quality to it and I love that about it.

The Official Video is amazingly trippy and much appreciated. It works perfectly with the song and is also, well, oddly beautiful.

Austin, TX heart-on-sleeve indie/folk-rock band Under the Rug took leave from their mobile home and traveled across the U.S. to Los Angeles to record their third full-length album, Homesick For Another World, produced by Oak House Recording owner and David Fridmann understudy David Peters (Blake Mills, Empress Of).

Western Canadian Music Awards’ “Breakout Artist of the Year” Ariel Posen - described by Rolling Stone as, “A modern-day guitar hero” - contributes slide guitar to the record. Under the Rug have been featured at American Songwriter, Rolling Stone India, Atwood Magazine, Americana UK and even received a co-sign from The Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle.

Album opener “Turkey Vulture” kicks off with a wistful tremolo from plaintive mandolin and elegant, understated piano in unison with its soul-baring sentiment: “Something in my body’s breakin’ / Wake up pale and shaking / Nothing is ideal / But I am fine.”
