Billy Tibbals and the indie rock / power pop punches of "Best Day I Ever Had" (Official Lyric Video)

A mere 10 seconds into "Best Day I Ever Had" by London born / bred, Los Angeles based Billy Tibbals and his band and I am thrust back to circa 1972 to 1984 or thereabouts. The days when indie rock bands were coalescing artists like The Who / The Kinks / T-Rex and twisting them into other iterations of glam and rock. It was not exactly new wave either but power pop with bands like 20/20, The Quick, The Plimsouls, Pearl Harbor and the Explosions, to name a few. In the UK, you had a revitalized mod movement with my favorite band leading the charge, The Jam.

Listening to Billy Tibbals and poking around on line and hearing him and his band LIVE and I realized that their jammy sound and tightly wound musicality feels like a hybrid of power pop, the Mod movement and glam all at once. In fact, if The Jam would of had Marc Bolan as a front man instead of Paul Weller, in my mind, they might of sounded a lot like the Billy Tibbals band. Billy and the boys with a sound that feel like a homage to a time before (and spot on by the way) will undoubtedly be pegged with the revival band moniker. Maybe an unfair tag (or maybe not) but in the end does it even matter?? Billy and his band mates embody this sound so completely that it certainly doesn't sound put on and the fact that they play their instruments so exquisitely well is a huge plus. Digging what I am hearing.

[Rising young Los Angeles rock n' roller Billy Tibbals has announced his debut EP "Stay Teenage", out April 21 via Silver Arrow Records. The six tracks, produced by Chris Robinson, are the literal culmination of Tibbals' life so far as he explores the transition from teen to young adult. Alongside the announcement, he also shared his new single "Best Day I Ever Had." Blending a vintage rock swagger with a modern wit, the track blazes through the jarring highs and lows of a day in a teenage life.]

Billy Tibbals was born and raised in London until his family moved to Los Angeles in 2014. After finding a passion for crate digging in old-school record shops, he quickly developed an interest in home-recording and composition using Garageband, eventually multi-tracking entire arrangements by himself in his garage. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tibbals committed himself to songwriting more than ever before, which resulted in the six bursts of energy contained on Stay Teenage. The tracks represent the culmination of the music Tibbals has loved his entire life to this point – the Beatles’ psychedelic pop sweep, the spangled attitude of glam, brawny hooks and melodies – all filtered through his unique, youthful perspective. Working simultaneously on the album while finishing high school, the result are lyrics that reflect how it feels to come of age; looking at the world around you and discovering fresh pressures amidst new freedoms. The project is eccentric in all the right ways, to the point where you’re bound to replay the whole thing after the needle’s taken off the grooves.
