Gorus and the rolling dark psychedelic beauty of "Bartleby"

"a twisted smile that looks like home..."

Step into the rolling diaphanous sounds of "Bartleby" by Gorus, the moniker of Los Angeles artist, musician, singer-songwriter Ethan Tyrer and you might feel a little high even if you are stone cold sober. The saturated psychedelia shifted my thoughts to those black and white 70's British films about unfulfilled lives and sexual improprieties. Maybe it is the sad stoney orchestrations that feel dressed in that period's sensibilities or Ethan's vocal lilt that for me suggests an amalgam of artists like Marc Bolan and John Lennon. The nuanced drumming, the sparse table of instrumentation, the ambient storytelling and those dour horns are incredibly darkly moving. A little past midway, ("say it's my dream you say it's yours") the building musical bridge is absolutely beguiling as is the outro that, again, really feels like the ending to a subversive film.

Press notey stuff reveal that:

Ethan Tyrer released [3 albums and an EP under the name Amina, Tyrer retired the project in 2022 and began making music under the name Gorus. His music is constantly shifting and has explored a wide range of genres, including experimental rock, jazz, electronic, and psychedelic rock. In addition to his music, Tyrer has developed his own unique style of digital art and animation that often accompanies his music. He has exhibited works at museums in Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, and San Francisco.]
