Hadnot Creek and the chiseled alt country storytelling of "A Good Talking To"

"well I want out last night and made an ass out of myself once again..."

"A Good Talking To" from Hadnot Creek, the musical project centered around the songs of Charlottesville singer / musician Robert Sawrey (with a supporting rotating cast of musicians including Zach Samel, Lee Sargent, Tyler Sargent, Carter Litvinas and Ben Laderberg), feels like a reflecting pool maybe after one too many nights pounding your drug of choice whether it be too much whiskey, too much weed, or too many turns down life's dead ends.

The musical bed is wonderfully circular, a sort of alt country / gardenrock headstone to chisel a eulogy on (figuratively speaking of course). It jams and could go on for 5 times longer, made out of rustic comfortable shapes that push you along and absolutely perfect for vocal discourse or guitar or pedal steel breaks. When Robert Sawrey throws down his bruised lyrics with a compelling vocal countenance that feels exquisitely lived in and with a sonic aesthetic that might be described as busker punk or proto folk or shitkicker bluesy. I feel this sound fully grounded in regrets and dark liquors like an amalgam of artists like Tom Petty, Cracker (and or Camper Van Beethoven), Bob Dylan and Lou Reed. Sawrey's lyrics are full of salt and vinegar and like a country boil Hadnot Creek throws it all out on a newspaper covered table for the world to see. This particular passage says it all:

"Well you smelled the whiskey on my breath
And heard the glass shatter against the wall
When I offered you the best of my love
You said that wasn't any kind of love at all"

Hadnot Creek's "A Good Talking To" is from their third album, "Long Gone", featuring Kendall Street Company guitarist, Ben Laderberg, currently on Bandcamp, streaming platforms as well as a limited vinyl release.
