Lippy Kids and the tightly twisted avant rock possession of "Witch"

"they come for you and I and me and you, for you and me and you and I..."

Twisted and bent like your reflection in a carnival mirror, "Witch" by Brisbane-based alternative rock quartet Lippy Kids is a sinister piece of avant garde art rock. The dense tightly wound musicality that beautifully bounds and swings, stabs, staggers, chants and wails in feral and precise ways brings to mind the freewheeling sonic diatribes of askew other artists (maybe) like an amalgam of bands like Mr. Bungle, Pere Ubu, Henry Cow, Deerhoof (or thereabouts).

"Witch" has such a creative dark storyline that it could easily be a Blumhouse produced horror movie. From press notes: [Initially recorded live during a Lippy Kids ‘Rug Session’, the narrative follows a psychotic brother who sees witches outside his home whilst babysitting his younger sister. Over its 03:56 minute run time, WITCH follows the brother’s descent into madness.]

“He is convinced they will attack and needs to protect his sister at all costs, devising a plan to hide downstairs and wait for the witches out. He is prepared to fight and kill those wretched witches.” -Shannon (Lippy Kids)

[Lippy Kids is made up of Alex, Bill, Shannon, and Tom, who all take influence from a variety of bands that have ultimately pushed them to further explore the heavier side of the alternative indie rock genre.]

The track, especially as an introduction to Lippy Kids, is a pleasure, a trip and fodder for tonight's nightmare all at once.
