Pink Mexico and the awesome heaviness of "Dungeonhead"

"Dungeonhead / there's no way out of this mess..."

As I trust fall into "Dungeonhead" by Pink Mexico, the NYC heavy pop project headed by Robert Preston Collum, I love it right away. There is this late 70's Pixies-esque free for all artfulness and the shoegaze columns of guitar sounds and forlorn broken dream vox had me thinking of My Bloody Valentine even though the differences are more than the similarities.

Collum calls it “a track about never feeling comfortable in one's own skin while reflecting on the obscurities of life during a time when the regular version of confusing and fucked up is even more fucked up and confusing”.

Oddly enough, or maybe not so oddly enough, I can relate. The lyrics reflect that detached feeling when you, for whatever reason, cannot connect with those in the town, community you live in. That feeling of emotional quicksand feels like death. I remember working at a work place were I felt the same way. In my case, there were enough good souls to reach out to to survive the oppression I was feeling.

This lyrical passage sticks in my head:

"the pavement heat / burns my fucking feet / and the siren screams "on my way" / and the story goes / from a key blade / to his nose / and when the party blows / it's ok..."

Whether it is the political proclivities, the culture that feels hateful, or the density of lost souls sometimes you just have to get out. “Dungeonhead” is from the upcoming "Mirrorhead" album, which arrives on May 19th via Quiet Panic (Slow Crush, Haunted Horses).

Press notes share:

["Mirrorhead" is the first album release from Pink Mexico since 2020’s Idiot Piss Illiterate (Broken Clover Records) and was written and recorded during the period that album was released. While Idiot Piss Illiterate rode on a frantic garage rock undercurrent, Mirrorhead swaps ragged pace for bruising waves of heavy sound (“Junkie Smile”, “Victimhead”, “Shame”) interspersed with moments of stripped-back exposure (“Fuck It I Quit”, “Muring Calm”). The result is Pink Mexico’s most definite and tangible work.

“Mirrorhead” is not only a record but a recollection of memories and experiences embroidered through experimentation and through the reconstruction of self. Through the unknown, Collum revisited music writing and re-imagined his work, tracing a new and personal path.]

Robert Preston Collum began the project Pink Mexico in 2013 with the release of "pnik mxeico.” Pink Mexico’s first LP attracted the attention of the Austin-based record label Fleeting Youth Records who then re-released "pnik mxeico"

The sound has been described as, “Landing somewhere between My Bloody Valentine's poppiest moments, Wavves's least bratty missives, the result is something like if Nirvana had had a surf rock phase.” - Noisey.

In June of 2016, “Fool” was released via the French-based label Big Tomato Records. This time, Pink Mexico joined Honus Honus during their Use Your Illusion Tour as direct support across the East Coast in North America.

“DUMP”, the third record by Pink Mexico, was released by Little Dickman Records in 2019. Unlike previous records, where Preston manned all instruments, this release included both Ian Everall and Grady Walker on bass and drums, respectively.

On July 1st, 2020 Pink Mexico released the 4th LP “Idiot Piss Illiterate” via San Francisco-based label Broken Clover Records during the height of the pandemic. And it is during this continuous event that Collum wrote and recorded “Mirrorhead” – Pink Mexico’s most definite and tangible work. “Mirrohead” is not only a record but a recollection of memories and experiences embroidered through experimentation and through the reconstruction of self. Through the unknown, Collum revisited music writing and re-imagined his work, tracing a new and personal path. “Mirrorhead” is comprised of tracks recorded by Jeremy Scott and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins). “Mirrorhead” is set to be released in June 2023 via Quiet Panic Records.
