The effervescent on high "Garakuta" by the Montreal-based Japanese psych-rock group TEKE::TEKE feels like the 1950's Hope and Crosby 'Road to Bali' in another universe, on acid, tropicalia turned jazzy, proto punkian and tribal all at the same time. From the band's upcoming album "Hagata", dropping on June 9th, 2023 via Kill Rock Stars, "Garakuta" that loosely translates to ‘goods of no more use nor value,' as lead vocalist Maya Kuroki surmises is "a song of rebellion for all that has been thrown out of this world.”
The world has seemed absolutely insane for a long long time, so that demographic might include most of us. At least, a lot of us have felt lost in this mother fucking crazy world and would gladly leave if we could somehow enter an alternate universe. TEKE::TEKE, at least, sonically, visually, artistically give us that universe to escape to at least for the length of the song.
[Accompanying the release is an animated video directed by Kuroki and the band's guitarist Sei Nakauchi Pelletier. Blending heavily stylized cartoon visuals with collage and live action cameos from band members, the video carries through the song's righteous and sarcastic humor attacking consumerist pollution.]
Drenched in whimsy, progressive post rock atmospheres, a cross generational pastiche of orchestral sounds cast through the lens of different countries' folk / original sounds and hybridized, TEKE::TEKE as press notes indicate [was first an homage to legendary Japanese guitarist Takeshi ‘Terry’ Terauchi and has quickly evolved into a band of its own by blending Japanese ‘Eleki’ with elements of modern music such as shoegaze, post-rock and noise. The band is a cocktail of 7 musicians from well known Montreal projects (Pawa Up First, Patrick Watson, Boogat, Gypsy Kumbia Orchestra and Dynamo Cleoptara)] Rad, mad and unfettered and unstoppable, TEKE::TEKE is an expansive inspiration.
