As I step into the gritty, sparse potent musical fray of "Let Me Through" by NYC three piece alt rockers Late Check Out I feel a sense of glee but also a kind of time / geographical dysphoria. The kind of open alt rock post punk sway, the explosive guitar breaks, the artful punk snarl in the vocals feels so 70's / 80's-esque. In fact, this collision of blues, hard rock, stoner, punk feels to me like an amalgam of the criminally underrated King's X and 70's super-group Captain Beyond and while Late Check Out are New Yorkers, why do I feel a UK lilt in the amazing vocal countenance I am hearing. I thought of both English singer / guitarist Hugh Alan Cornwell (The Stranglers) and Belfast born and bred singer / guitarist Jake Burns (Stiff Little Fingers) and vocal cues that I just can't quite put my finger on. Oddly enough (for whatever crazy reason) I thought about the Clash too).
This time transporting raw, powerful sound might be perplexing in terms of a descriptor or comparison but that is a GOOD thing. It shows me how original Late Check Out sounds.
