LOW-RES and the transporting post punk energy of "Kitchen" (feat. Maria Pettersson and Calle Olsson)

"we're going up north / we've got magnetic fields..."

From their upcoming album DÄRFÖR, dropping May 5th, Swedish post punk duo LOW-RES take us on a savory trip on the track "Kitchen" collaborating with Maria Pettersson and Calle Olsson (Paper, Paddington DC, The Bear Quartet). Against a driving machine beat, day dreamy synth lines as well as bottom heavy dirty synths and beautiful flute lines, we hear what feels like a conversation between new friends during a car trip up north, "we're going up north / we've got magnetic fields..." and their lies the artful charm. The song reflects that faint anxiety and awkwardness of filling silence with those you don't know well or even at all.

LOW-RES says, "Kitchen is about driving up the country, playing music together and being nervous about socializing" adding “The song developed through a number of steps. First the music was written by LOW-RES, then lyrics, vocals and synth overlays by Maria and Calle and finally flute and mix by Konie (Viagra Boys, Les Big Byrd, The Soundtrack Of Our Lives etc)."

I love the conversation contained in the refrain, "there's a restaurant nearby / we're not going their tonight / because / there's a little kitchen / we got music equipment". As their sophomore album, DÄRFÖR is inextricably linked to their 2021 debut Varför that featured guest appearances by Jukka Rintamäki (Silverbullit) and Per Nordmark (Fireside) among others. A four-track EP ‘Du å ja’ followed in 2022 with a refined sound of analog drum machines and Swedish lyrics.

“Varför and Därför belong together,” says LOW-RES. “Both records were written in the same vein and with the same approach: fast, creative and with many collaborations that colour the expression. We have a lot of fun making music and it works as an antidepressant. We just heard the term Art Therapy and that pretty much sums up why we do this.”

Physically the two albums will be bound together on a vinyl release combining the two albums to a double album. This beautiful entity is also released on the 5th May and can be pre-ordered HERE now!
