The Areola Treat and the beautifully raw passion of "Melting My Nerve Endings"

"searching, enchanting, beside me, it's part of your religion, unmoving, unrooting, it's part of a conviction that's keeping us channeled inside..."

The Areola Treat based out of Valletta, Malta is back with an urgent, poetic, bombastic alt rocker called "Melting My Nerve Endings". Starting with Adrian Mizzi's chunky staccato guitar rhythms pushing against Lisa Micallef Grimaud's wide eyed dire vox that immediately gave me an air of the iconic German artist / model / singer Nico (who paired on and off with the Velvet Underground). It is funny because Nico's vocal persona was aloof and monotone but Grimaud's is anything but, yet, still they share commonalities here.

I love the guitar shapes, the breathless tensions shaped by atmospheres that feel mysterious. When the bass and gothic drums barrel in the raw intension / sense of 70's and 80's proto punk experimentation is felt within the gritty passion. In a previous review of The Areola Treat I mentioned Diamanda Galas, Concrete Blonde and PJ Harvey and in terms of guttural rock / punk extravagances I feel it again.

Besides the amazing Lisa Micallef Grimaud (vocals), and the aforementioned Adrian Mizzi on guitar and who penned "Melting My Nerve Endings", the band is rounded out by the formidable Steve Shaw (bass) and Chris Busuttil (drums).

"Melting My Nerve Endings", a dark love song, is the first single from the band's upcoming double album to be released later this year.

The Areola Treat are an alternative rock band from Valletta. The band formed around 2006, and are inspired by US-based, late 1970s art punk, science fiction novels, William Burroughs and Edgar Allen Poe. Gut-wrenching female screeches, screams and punchy drum beats to discordant, drone harmonies that seem to develop into rich walls of sound. They have since then launched an EP and 3 albums, in 2008, 2011, 2013 and 2014 respectively.

They are back with a whole lot of new music set for release in 2023 in the form of 7 singles as well as an EP and Double Album. Red Town Baby will be available via Kewn Records on launch day with no physical release.
