Versus Machine and the carved out massive heaviness of "Rat Race"

"stuck in a rat race..."

The sonic hurricane that is "Rat Race", from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania based Versus Machine's recently released 2023 eponymous album, is an explosive piece of work. Built on heavy nuances of progressive avant rock shapes that build and transform into massive walls of sound (all the while feeling like a complex interconnected musical puzzle) moving around and in on itself. It almost feels like an instrumental until shoegaze-esque vox fold in at the half way point. The vox, contemplative and mellow. compared to the bass, guitar, drums interplay allow the song to breathe, maybe even meditate on things until the real heaviness begins.

And a beautiful heaviness it is.

Guitars scream, bend, push and carve out spaces in true heavy / post hardcore metal fashion. I thought of an amalgam of METZ, Drive Like Jehu, Unwound, even Metallica.

Versus Machine is comprised of Michael James Stipe of Babel Map and Northern Gloom on bass and backing vocals, Brian Doherty of Northern Gloom on drums and Stephen Tilley on guitar and lead vocals.

Featuring Michael James Stipe of Babel Map and Northern Gloom on Bass and Backing Vocals, Brian Doherty of Northern Gloom on Drums and Stephen Tilley on Guitar and Lead Vocals, Versus Machine is a power house trio in Central Pennsylvania. With cinematic landscapes that complement each song, Versus Machine isn't here to just do an altered version of what those before them have done, rather they are here to make their own brand of rock music that cant be heard anywhere else, from anyone else.
