Sunniva and the progressive punch and psychedelia of "Wind Like Fire"

"Under soil, Pinned to rock
Our love it boils, heated clock
Baby let’s take a walk, I thirst for your time
And I wonder how could you be so fine..."

There is a fuck-ton of psych rock happening today. While it probably never left, the re-invention or revivalism of 60's /70's psychedelic rock seemed to ramp up in popularity in two phases. First ramp up. in the 90's as new wave and indie rock were moving primarily into grungey places and secondly around 2008 when surf punk and desert rock seemed to be have been drip fed from surf rock, Goth rock (and Goth pop) and post hardcore started incorporating slight jazz and blues dips.

Psych punk, psych rock (shoegaze or not) is wildly popular and, maybe at it's worst, (to me) it is a direct pull from 60's Beatles / Indian or Mid-East mysticism tones and at it's best, 5 full steps away from that sound, incorporating aspects of progressive rock, surf punk and aspects of soul (derived at it's core from the blues and R&B even).

I feel the latter from from Frederick Maryland's Sunniva. All you have to do is listen to a track like "Wind Like Fire" with the progressive spitfire drumming, the direct vocal countenance that feels like heavy garden rock, the lead work that feels jammy with tentacles in 70's heavy metal and maybe especially the exquisite bass work, no.... the fucking exquisite bass work.

During aspects of "Wind Like Fire" I thought of the criminally underrated late 70's English progressive rock outfit Be Bop Deluxe and that, my friends, is high praise indeed.

"Wind Like Fire" is from the band's EP "Wind Painted Moon". Sunniva is (from WPM liner notes) Danniel Knight  (songs/lyrics/vocals/rhythm guitar), Conner Knight (bass), Patrick Harman (drums), Andrew Kuhens (lead guitar) and Tristan Wasely (keys/synth/organ).

From Frederick Maryland, Sunniva is the project of brothers Danniel (guitar/vox/lyrics) and Conner (bass) who come from a multigenerational musical family. The songs encompass all of the music that they have heard without regard for genres or fitting into any mold. Sunniva will continue to keep making music and keep growing in different directions because it is music from the heart. Enjoy.
