The Areola Treat and the raw abrasive alt rock nature of "Deserter"

"searching, enchanting, beside me, it's part of your religion, unmoving, unrooting, it's part of a conviction that's keeping us channeled inside..."

This morning there is a chill in the air and I am enjoying my normal, standard cup of Matcha green tea with tumeric. I usually have two cups early before I get into something to eat later in the morning with my two cups of strong coffee. Weird, huh? I don't know.

What isn't weird but instead is just totally invigorating is finding a song by The Areola Treat our of Valletta, Malta in my subs box. The track in question is "Deserter". The track, right out of that box, is a full throttle rocker running of a rabid tom tom beat with dense fills, churning guitars with down beat strikes and a big anchoring bass line. Again I am taken aback by Lisa Micallef Grimaud's vocal persona that is totally fierce but drenched in cool as well. For whatever reason within Lisa's sound here I thought of an amalgam of singers like Brody Dalle, Amy Taylor, PJ Harvey, Debbie Harry sonically and attitudinal.

The guitar break at around 2:36 is phenomenally punchy and it gives way to a surprising bridge with Lisa's guttural vocal pushes feeling feral. The relative calm and increasing build ups in this section are more than memorable.

Once again, besides the Lisa Micallef Grimaud (vocals), you have Adrian Mizzi on guitar (who penned "Deserter" with Lisa), rounded out by the formidable Steve Shaw (bass) and Chris Busuttil (drums). These guys are so amazing at what they do and the atmospheres they craft from the ground up.

"Deserter" is yet another great track from the band's upcoming double album to be released later this year.

The Areola Treat are an alternative rock band from Valletta. The band formed around 2006, and are inspired by US-based, late 1970s art punk, science fiction novels, William Burroughs and Edgar Allen Poe. Gut-wrenching female screeches, screams and punchy drum beats to discordant, drone harmonies that seem to develop into rich walls of sound. They have since then launched an EP and 3 albums, in 2008, 2011, 2013 and 2014 respectively.

They are back with a whole lot of new music set for release in 2023 in the form of 7 singles as well as an EP and Double Album. Red Town Baby will be available via Kewn Records on launch day with no physical release.
