SNEAKPEEK and the bent electronic visions of "Strawberry Reality" (Official Video)

"make believe, I can feel you close to me..."

Manifesting your own reality. It is the realm of life coaches and gurus. It also, in a very real way, is a thought process that can make you much happier while you are chasing your dreams. Not that you can shape your own destiny by just thinking it, wouldn't that be nice, but, instead, that actually seeing yourself as the person you want to be and believing it might be the single most important thing before you focus on the many steps to get there.

I couldn't not think about this while listening to the trippy, groove based ethereal affirmation "Strawberry Reality" from SNEAKPEEK's sophomore album "Scene Within A Dream" that just dropped 3 days ago on June 2nd (2023). Comprised of California natives, Los Angeles residents Dora Hiller and Aric Bohn hone their sound "surrounded by walls of synthesizers and vintage drum machines in their Glassell Park studio. “We love obscure electronic music from the 70s, 80s + 90s,” notes Hiller, “and wanted to experiment with a new sound that embodied those elements but with our own spin on it.”

I listen to a lot of music, some who know me well might argue that I listen to too much music (feigned laughter) and for me, songs do not have to hit you over the head. People send me a lot of songs that have 30 tracks layered in with every damn one pretty much upfront. The result feels oppressive and out of focus. Listening to "Strawberry Reality" (and other tracks from "Scene Within A Dream") and you feel a clear vision, an elegant one. The sound is one where it feels like everything that was not needed was tossed in the garbage bin (or archived for future inspirations). From the super pop synth that buries under your skin, maybe like a ghostly love child of MJ, Madonna, Duran Duran, and the trance funk guitar lines, like an amalgam of Adrian Belew, Roxy Music, Jamie West-Oram, and I can feel the new wave, post punk 80's / 90's allure. At the same time Dora Hiller's aloof mesmerizing vocal countenance feels magnetic but on the down low and while this might sound strange I thought of Mazzy Star, Beach House, Low for some reason.

"synchronize harmony / concentrate your energy / virtual victories / sea foam green nectarine / execute these visions / more than I imagine / if you don't look for magic / you will never find it..."

Manifest away.

Once upon a time in the city of dreams - Los Angeles, Dora Hiller and Aric Bohn formed the fuzzy fuming psych band known as Sneakpeek, bringing together a sound that combined elements of dream pop with grungy, garage-rock sludge. Both Southern California natives, Dora and Aric’s paths led them to perform in various bands over the years but Sneakpeek has always been the passion project close to their heart. Their self titled debut was released in 2013 by Burger Records and hailed by the LA Times as a “noisy nine-track album offering up heavy, druggy guitar riffs that’d make Kurt Vile (or Lou Reed) proud”. Now they have emerged from their musical hibernation to produce a brand new album recorded entirely in the Glassell Park neighborhood of LA. This forthcoming record has one foot in the abstract avant-garde and another foot firmly rooted within the sensibilities of new wave, disco and synth pop embedded with strands of mutant DNA.
