Ultraboy and the groove cut electronic synth pop, art funk punk of Dumb Mountain"

"don't climb dumb mountain, don't climb unless you want to fall..."

Ultraboy is the musical moniker of Sacramento, California based singer-songwriter / multi-instrumentalist Max Morrison and the title track from his new album "Dumb Mountain" feels circular, a groove based electronic mantra or caveat. When it begins with fluttering electronica, like anodic butterflies against synth drones it feels futuristic and vintage at the same time. When the funky synth beat, falling synth orchestrations, guitar rhythms, and fuzz synth bass drop there is an East coast 80's art funk punk quality and though Morrison's somber vocals cascade in there is still a sort of Bootsy Collins / Tom Tom club vibe despite the track feeling darker.

Morrison shares:

[My new album, "Dumb Mountain," (as well as this title track) is a collection of 13 tracks written and recorded over the last 9 months. The songs explore my own struggles with anxiety, imposter syndrome, and the ultimate goal of creating in a way that feels best for me.. Writing and recording music has been a constant outlet for me as I explore and deal with my own emotional experiences. I have been recording music for over a decade but this is the most significant shift I have had creatively thus far. I was inspired by the music of acts like Men I Trust, Mind Shrine, Jerry Paper, and Genesis Owusu. I listen to quite a range of music as most musicians do, but this newest album is most influenced by modern indie and alternative sounds. This album is a blend of upbeat alternative grooves and lowkey dream pop-inspired excursions.]

The vibe for me feels cross generational, down turned but hopeful too. Vintage and deconstructed but futuristic.

Besides working on his own music, Morrision has been a member of the Flip a Beat Club collective that started under the leadership of Sacramento-native Monsrock and legendary underground producer Dibiase. Under their leadership he has helped coordinate events and perform at venues such as Harlow’s Nightclub here in Sacramento and Neck of the Woods in San Francisco. Since 2022, the collective have expanded to eight different cities in the United States and Canada and have hosted 3 or more events every month since he got involved.

So very cool. So impactful.
