wilt and the moving alt rock confessional of "puberty"

"when I thought I ruled the world / standing on your shoulders / and my life felt so round / when we still went to playgrounds / but it always turns upside down..."

The moving confessional "puberty" by indie alt rock band wilt is so impactful, not because it is about the loss of a parent and my parents are no longer around but because I am a parent. At times my kids who are young adults still bring up their fond memories of playing "keep daddy down". It was a game I always lost. When I came home from work they would pull me down on the carpet and jump on top of me, not allowing me to get up. It would always end up in laughter and me tapping out.

"puberty" a sonic and emotional shape shifter cuts with poetic words sung by Chelsea Rifkin and expressing memories of being so young that her dad could easily lift her up on her shoulders. Other words seem to relive father and daughter as being an unbreakable bond, of sharing time and musical tastes too. Rifkin possesses a vocal countenance that reveals scars and pain. As soon as the acoustic guitar picking, sparse piano notes and darkly dreamy electric guitar sonics fill the emotional voids there are signs that Chelsea's and her dad's early connections might be changing.

It is not until the defining lyrics:

"and when the vinyl hit the floor
i couldn’t see you anymore
and when the violence in my head gets loud
i forget you’re even dead"

... until we realize that in this story Chelsea's father passes away. The death of a parent, is of course, life changing. Even a less than perfect parent (and who is perfect) is that crucial touchstone that shares your DNA, is a link in a historical change. A devastating reminder of how precious time is.

At this point, wilt, Chelsea Rofkin on vocals, Aaron Liebman (guitar / bass), Andrew Perrea (guitar / bass) and Dan Bermudez (drums) transform "puberty" from a personal confessional to a blistering form of sonic bloodletting as the song erupts with huge alt rock guitars with a patina of grunge too.

"puberty" will stick in your head, will implant itself under you skin and into your heart especially if you have lost those closest to you.
