Candid Faces and the post punk push back of "Coming Home" (Official Lyric Video)

"Tony doesn’t shut his gob / Compensating for his small brain / And various other things, another one that you can’t fix..."

The acerbic post punk diorama of "Coming Home" by Hull, Uk Candid Faces feels deliciously smirky and potently mosh worthy. Running on a post punkified heavy metal rock prog, the lyrics are a tongue in cheek commentary on the classic "British man", the get off my lawn sort of oldster. We have many in America too and. even worse, have self aggrandizing White Nationalists who are in Congress, a byproduct of the Trump era, who find women, LGBTQ+ and people of color as sub-human.

Liz Shaw's matter of fact vocal countenance as opposed to a feral yell makes her diatribe even more effective and while the song can feel comical it's truthful barbs highlights the real problem of systemic hate / toxic masculinity and as we all know hate trickles down, unfortunately, to the young. Liz shares:

“It may seem like a fun jokey track that pokes fun at bigots and abusers but for our guitarist it was a healing process and a way for them to write about difficult experiences from their childhood, even if it was just an ambiguous four lines”.

Some of the song lyrics:

Sometimes when I’m sat at home
I think to myself what a terrible world we’re living in
I know you hate us
Why don’t you just leave us alone

You’re such a dreadful mix!
You’re such a dreadful mix!
You’re such a dreadful mix!
You’re such a dreadful mix (I’m a dreadful mix)

Haters always deserve push back, bigots need to be called out, women should control their bodies, we all deserve to pursue our own happiness and rabble rousing songs are needed in this political climate.

Candid Faces are lead vocalist Liz Shaw, Taro Keeitch and Joe Beeks on guitars, Ben Hales on bass and Kurt ‘The Hurt’ Jackson on drums.

Not taking themselves too seriously and citing bands like Idles, Softplay, LIFE and Low Hummer as major influences, Candid Faces write hard-hitting, catchy songs that revolve around subjects like old women, abuse, fist fights & paranoia. Their music’s been described as ‘trash-pop’ and ‘jagged’ by fans & journalists alike.
