dery and the moving reflecting pool of "sparkle"

"I know you know there’s things we cannot stand / but you should know you made me a better man /
well there’s someone out there, it’s true  / just know they could be better for you..."

With raw emotional lyrics bathed, maybe even soaked in melancholia, "sparkle" by New York singer songwriter dery still feels uplifting. And, it is not just the soaring trombone and flugelhorn pushing chamber pop atmospheres, stunningly rendered by producer Felix Gerlach (who also adds his own beautiful lead guitar melodies as well) it is the nuanced emotional shifts in dery's vocal countenance. Her voice, incredibly vulnerable yet self aware feels so incredibly intimate in the mix it is as if her lips are a mere few inches from your ear.

dery meeting Gerlach feels like kitmet as press notes reveal:

[After solo-backpacking in 2020 dery was stranded in Germany during the pandemic, thereby having the opportunity to establish a new musical network overseas. within a year she recorded “chapter two” with guitarist/producer Felix Gerlach - funded by grants and released in 2022 with great reception by Spotify editorial playlists. In receiving a second government grant the following year, dery returned to Germany in 2022 to record “chapter three” with Gerlach (2023 release). these two albums are a pivot in experimentation with pop production to explore the genre in more depth.]

dery shares this about "sparkle":

“This song portrays the bittersweet reflection on a past relationship with gratitude. The protagonist acknowledges there were intolerable aspects but also credits their partner with making them a better person. Admitting that there might be a better match for their ex-partner; the protagonist reminisces on the sparkle they first experienced and how their goodbye is still painful. Despite the heartache, they sincerely wish for their ex’s happiness and success - hoping that they thrive beyond mere contentment."

"sparkle" is, by any measure, a stunner. dery draws you in like an embrace allowing you to place your own life's patterns, tenuous past relationship templates on top, reflecting on your own ups and downs in that regard. Exquisitely beautiful and relatable.

every time i close my eyes we sparkle
still to think of our goodbye makes me crumble

dery roams planet earth creating audio fictions about her memories, people’s lives, histories and stories from our collective consciousness. she writes and co-produces sonic narrative anthologies to engage listeners in a transcendent experience - intended to be listened to like a novel.

dery is grounded in her identity. she is a force of expression all on her own; using music composition as her tool to explore complexities of sound. songwriting allows dery to unearth layers of meaning that reflect the world around her instead of solely focusing on her own experience. her sound creates a transfixing auditory environment for the listener, exploring concepts on an intimate and global spectrum. dery challenges music industry norms by focusing on composition rather than composer. she releases her work for those moments when we turn to music to feel less alone. for dery it does not matter what you look like, who you are, or where you come from - it is her belief that we all share the same emotions despite our differences and experience similar hardships no matter who we are.

dery is a genuine and versatile writer, who co-produced her early works with drummer/producer Doug Yowell. in 2014 she released her first EP “the foreword”, consisting of songs about divorce and domestic violence accompanied by her unique, meditative sound. in 2019 she released “chapter one” - a 16 song album ranging in genre from pop to jazz to drum-heavy a-capella tracks exploring topics of indecisiveness, heartbreak, assault, illness and more.
