Simen Mitlid and the conscience and consequence of "Bloodshed"

"now every class of water / and every broken dream / is falling from the tower / behind the magazine / I heard about some cold war / it's all you ever see / now everything's below us / like a (cluttered?) submarine..."

Oslo, Norway based singer/songwriter Simen Mitlid whose beautiful melancholia oftentimes stirs in surprising dark touchstones in his sonic stories (like wondering if a gun in a glove box is real or not) giving his folk songs heaviness. In fact, mental health and sadness are haunting elements and oftentimes in the fiber of the songs whether they are in the lyrics or not. His latest "Bloodshed" is sure to bolster many interpretations and I like that. This track is stripped down and some of the falling melodies made me think of Elliot Smith.

Mitlid sings about Cold Wars, about dead assassins, about crimes (pretend or maybe not), about worthless nations, about looking for meaning, about realizing the our reality is pretty fucked up. All these things could be reduced to a relationship, it could land in the micro or macro. Either way, the poetry and Mitlid's vocal countenance is evocative as always.

"Boodshed" is the title track form Simen Mitlid's latest album on Koke Plate that is set to drop any day now.

"Through 'Bloodshed,' I wanted to convey the sense of numbness and detachment when we try to justify our own actions and those of others, even when we know they’re wrong.” says Mitlid.
