Norwegian singer songwriter, auteur Vaarin has a way of disarming even the most cynical, tarnished of armor. "Made For Love", from her 2023 debut album "The Identity of Belonging" feels like art cast in sonic amber, free from current indie tropes but instead birthed from another time, a zoetrope of tactile musical and ambient sounds / noises hand in hand. It is as if you can feel the mechanics of the instrumentation as well as the atmosphere itself sinewy cut from vintage clothes like emotional scratches from a 1930's French pop record. .
And this evocative voice, the character of Vårin Strand's vocal countenance, makes me think of a cross generational amalgam of influential artists like Lucienne Boyer, Stina Nordenstam, Bjork, Yeule, Tori Amos (to name a few) with deeply poetic lyrics spilling from her lips, " Rumbling through my bones / Lay down my love / I’m made for love / Let him into your bones / Like sugar...". I can't find the proper words to describe the unique nature of just this one aspect of Vaarin's sound. I have not had the chance of delving into the new album but I plan on doing so.
The Official Video of "Made For Love" enhances the vintage worldly sounds and as edited by Strand is a beautiful blue toned black and white pastiche of vintage, classical cast images and artful photographs.
