Carré and the artful vintage sci-fi electronica of "Turn Down The Choir" (Live At The Forge Los Angeles)

"we are, we are / you come and come with me..."

Where do I begin? Watching / listening / experiencing "Turn Down The Choir" (Live At The Forge Los Angeles) by Carré, comprised of prominent indie talent from bands all over L.A. and France, made me think of some of the original purveyors of electronica likee Kraftwerk and The Normal and flash on seeing Thom Yorke on his Tomorrow's Modern Boxes tour at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta in 2019 (amazing). I also thought about the exquisite cool power of two drummers and thought about the times I have seen the then 'The Osees' doing this. There is something incredibly engaging about two performers wailing on their respective kits that stays with you.

From the onset, ""Turn Down The Choir" invades your senses with layers of synths that seem to harmonize but stretch and turn away from each other in dissonant spaces. This undulation as a drum beat with trip hop leanings in the background give away to something otherworldly like an amalgam of vintage sci-fi and 70's horror film soundtracks, other arpeggios and scattered shards of cinema, vocalizations, "Turn Down The Choir" spiral the spaces into a moody downturn of emotions, a descent and then those fucking glorious double drumming builds. What happens next is a mixture of sounds that feel dangerous, subversive and surreal but in a way that will make your face contort into a big, even painful smile. I love this.

Carré band member Keveen Baudouin shares this:

“TURN DOWN THE CHOIR is a song about what people experience on a daily basis rumbling through the world but also what they tend to feel during a live show. The chaos aspect of the noise surrounding us at all times, the desire of wanting more, the hypnosis staring at a performer and feeling prisoner of their will. It encompasses all those feelings, we're here trying to captivate the crowd giving a unique experience, like a battle that needs to be won in order to conquer their heart. It's the song that has been having the best response so far, from our concerts and our streaming numbers as well.”

[CARRÉ will be releasing two music videos, which you can see here, from live performances on August 25. We believe the story of the videos would be told well by your writing.

The videos come from a performance at The Forge LA in April 2022, an art studio in Cypress Park, Los Angeles that Keveen says is “run by a friend of ours where we shot the actual music video for TURN DOWN THE CHOIR in 2021.”

According to Keveen, CARRÉ live is as much about art and aesthetics as about music: “CARRÉ live set is inspired by performance art and art as a whole mainly. Soulwax is also a huge inspiration for us and the way they use lights and design during their set.” Keveen says they brought fans to “an art space, where we set up everything to create a cozy surrealistic atmosphere.”]
