Mars FM and the pedal steel folk and punkery of "The Rug"

 

"I couldn't stop walking / my feets knew were they were going / but my minds had no idea..."

Upon first listen, "The Rug" by Mars FM, the psych folk rock trio of Zack Bauer [vocals, guitar, pedal steel], Zoe Larsen [vocals, bass, harmonium] and Eli Wheeler [drums], and the sense feels darkly drawn folk country. Upon subsequent listens the rattling rockabilly guitar lines and shuffle beat, the surprising jumps downward into alt country, even country punk places had me thinking something else entirely. More like a collision of artists like The Flying Burrito Brothers, X, REM and The Pixies (with a side salad of Frank Black and the Catholics). In other words, more alt rock or punk than folk on the sonic seismograph but still a blend of both. The subversive underpinning like that of artists like Modest Mouse and the aforementioned Pixies flows, snaking it's way around in intriguing ways.
