"A life / Fades / A candle burns out / Leaves / The darkness that's made..."
The forward push, the energy of "We Can't Keep Running Away", the title track of Nathaniel Paul's sophomore album, for me, feels like a blend of 8 bit, proggy pop that edges into psychedelic places. There are glimmers of fantasy rock, new age undercurrents and bedroom pop. More than once, listening, I saw myself gaming on an old school video game at the La Mirada arcade in the early 80's. This cross blend of sounds, expertly produced by Paul who is the singer-songwriter and producer from The Emmy award winning band ‘The Bergamot’, is full of whimsy and past memories.
Fades
A candle burns out
Leaves
The darkness that's made
If we measure
How we fall
Back
With faded pasts
Returning to black
Returning to black
Returning to black
Returning to black
Nathaniel Paul's vocal sound, at times with a narrowed eq also lends to times before (in my mind). Sonic touchstones like voices on cassette, times when the neon glow on your face reminds you of times away from your phone, untethered and free. Nathaniel Paul’s sophomore album “We Can't Keep Running Away” will be released in early Fall 2023 via AWAL.
We can't just keep running away
Keep running away
Keep running away
Keep running away
Keep running away
