"I’m driving east to move back to a memory I know / But they’ve all got wrinkles in their eyes from wincing fast and blinking slow..."
The musically acerbic, charming, corybantic "In My Dreams, You Win" by Pyzow!, the project of L.A. raised, Chicago based singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Ivan Pyzow, (who along with some serious skilled musical collaborators) dazzles and deceives in brilliant ways. The dense musical arc is so pitch perfect in shifting you off your feet, one part rock / jazz fusion jam session, one part an improvisational amped up theme song to an 80's sitcom (Perfect Strangers comes to mind), one part musical theater and two parts sex romp. "In My Dreams, You Win" hints at an acid jazzed dance shuffle by a 90's Jamiroquai, with a 70's Stevie Wonder on the keys and Jeff Skunk Baxter on lead (or thereabouts). The playing on this track by all involved is absolutely killer: Ivan Pyzow (Vocals, Wurlitzer), Gus Martini (Bass), Sam Genualdi (Guitar) and Jake Hawrylak (drums) with Brok Mende recording, mixing and mastering.
The songwriting is top shelf as is Pyzow's vocal countenance and dreamy storytelling, playful, artful phrasings, bouncing and skipping all the while. OH, and the whimsical pretty ballet meets interpretive dance at 1:07 is fucking lovely.
Your fingers running, searching for a spot she says that you can’t find
Between her eyes and ears a tender spot that tingles down her spine
A little button on her temple / What she needs to close her mind / Find it / Push it / “Turn me off and tuck me in”
She said, “It’s hard out there for you / But in my dreams, babe, you win”
Pyzow shares:
"This song is about returning to a place and finding it changed. It’s about the long journey across the country, up a flight of stairs, across the cheek of someone you’re trying to reach. It’s about finding your place when those around you want to be alone."
