Theo Sayers and the sweet sunshine hugs and kisses of "Open Plan" (Official Video)

"She sings the songs that her parents sang / The postman and his wife will come for tea / Add to the pile of things, the washing and the laundry / And tell me ooh I’m a lucky man..."

The unfettered joy and soft shoe of "Open Plan" by Cambridge, England based Theo Sayers feels transcendent, floating somewhere between the whimsy of Monty Python, the romantic sweetness of Burt Bacharach and the poetic elegance of Al Stewart. The lyrics bounce from Sayer's lips playing off a pretty other voice too, a fresh serenade to each other, the stuff of first crushes or newlyweds.

She comes home to a happy fish
The dogs been fed, no pots have gone amiss
How did this come to this?
Life was one hard slog now it's one big kiss
And tell me ooh I’m a lucky guy
I’ve found happiness in the open sky
A flawless lawn and a summer day, so
Tell me if you want me babe

From press notes:

[Whether waxing lyrical on the woes of a runny nose, setting angry emails to music or singing a poignant tribute to a long-forgotten quarryman, Theo Sayers has been charming audiences with his off-beat, rollicking songs since 2018. Taking from a dizzyingly diverse array of influences (post-punk, indie, synth-pop, disco), Sayers rarely fails to set venues alight. His wordplay and distinctive vocal delivery have earned him comparisons with the likes of Ian Dury, David Byrne and The Streets. Living in his hometown of Cambridge, his self-released Ado Perma EP was followed by several acclaimed music videos. His debut album Ramen For Two is out soon.]

Theo shares:

“Open Plan” started as a collaboration between me and my friend Jules Gawlik (who previously sang on my song “Belly Slaps” and also created artwork for various releases/gig posters). It's a song about making people feel welcome and supported during difficult times. It also riffs on the English obsession with homes, presenting an idealised portrait of domestic life. As well as featuring my regular collaborator Jasmine Brady on backing vocals, “Open Plan” features a coterie of Cambridge musicians, including David Allatt and Laureen Hodge (from Explorers Society) on keys and trumpet, Ben Parker (from GrassRoof and The Ninety Six) on drums and Casbien Barr on guitar. The music video, created using old VHS home videos of me and my family in the early 00s, is dedicated to my mum, who passed away last year.

100% of the money made from sales of the song on Bandcamp will be donated to the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, who cared for my mum during the late stages of her illness.
