Cayo Coco and the existential runaway boodletting of "Haunt" (Official Video)

"I'm a picture / I'm the mosh pit / I'm the silhouette / I'm the lipstick on your cheek..."

In the transforming mind and body horror of "Haunt" (song and Official Video) by Los Angeles based Cayo Coco, the solo project of Los Angeles based multi-instrumentalist, Lumen Loraine, the artist purges a lot and maybe step over indie rock / indie pop over to existential pop. Having covered this talented singer-songwriter several times, this one feels more like blood letting and given the season and the wonderfully filmic Official Video maybe it is.

"Haunt" has hints of "me and you" relationship stuff or quicksand. Those nefarious dicey times when you have to decide how much of yourself you should or need to give up but that could just be a total misinterpretation. Lumen digs deeper and framed perfectly within the stirring runaway sort of surfy punk sound, you can feel something between teenage angst and a mid-life crisis. Self-actualization hung on fish hooks looking to tear you apart.

The songwriter shares, “I felt myself being stubborn on this track. I question The Universe, ruminating in the narrowness of the puny ego mind. But as the song forges on I feel myself breaking out of that cage and experiencing revelations of oneness (I’m the trees, I'm the moon, and so is everyone else). To me the song is the recognition that I can finally give up whatever views I was clinging to in an attempt to make sense of my life.”

I absolutely adore this track, part of a two song package produced by Lumen and Zach Fogarty (Jean Dawson, Eyedress) as a lead up to the November release of Cayo Coco's second album, “Cosmic Healing”. For me "Haunt" feels like a Cayo Coco pivot or metamorphosis of sorts and I admit that I don't know every Cayo Coco song so I apologize if I am talking out of turn but I feel an especially fervent, rabid, utterly ID explosion of ripping oneself apart, of peeling the onion to get to one's own essence. I feel that sense of self exploration on high here for whatever reason.

I could be wrong but, in any event, I am eager to dip into "Cosmic Healing". I am not going to review the Official Video, lest I give anything away. Suffice it to say, it is a lot of fun emotional bloodletting and everyone involved kills.
