"lately, I've been feeling kind of spacey / but I'm not rich enough to go to space / and frankly / even if I had the money / I think I would be lonely and out of place..."
Go with me on this. Confession: I have not ever been a Rush fan although as I have gotten older I totally appreciate the depth of their musicality (send all hate male to Anthony Fantano) but in an alternate universe (so to speak) I will gladly accept Brooklyn's amazing Shagshop Rooftop in lieu of Rush after hearing the extended version of their track "Houston". I have to admit that seeing the song at over 11 minutes on my electronic desk and never hearing them before I was not in the right headspace during my busy morning to give them a listen.
Well, the 11 minutes plus flew by as I listened to a sort of corny but charming indie rock / meets 60's French pop with jazz dips jag, grow and expand into seriously potent lounge punk meets yacht rock and then erupt into tightly wound post rock meets proggy psychedelic rock meets space rock and more. Fucking ace man, fucking great musicianship. Don't believe me, just listen.
THINK: Phish meets Porcupine Tree.
LINER NOTES:
[Asher Rosenfeld invited his college buddy, Alex Weiss (guitar), to jam with him and Dan Safdie (drums) after a brutal week of work. Recognizing the instant musical chemistry, Alex and Dan decided to make this a thing, sans Asher (musically, we mean—we still love him and he is still in the band spiritually). They soon brought Dan’s friend Sam Raudabaugh (bass), into the fold, and a band was born. Atop the roof of a wonderful shop called Shag in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the band would throw epic parties late into the night, year after year. Spectators would come up from the street, others would dance from adjacent rooftops, and still one or two others may have called the cops. But nothing could stop the magic, and the band soon spread from the Shagshop Rooftop to the NYC bar scene and beyond: all the way to Woodstock NY and — with the release of their first studio single, Houston (Extended Version) — to your ears, wherever you may be.]
