Some Days Are Darker and the post punk dark romance of "Lost Days '96" (Inferno Choir Remix)

"I think I'm alone / I think I can give you what you need..."

Propelled by sinewy bass synths, and horror pop vibrating keys, the Inferno Choir Remix of "Lost Days '96' by Phoenix based Some Days Are Darker shifts the original and places it on unsteady ground casting imagery of foggy dark streets with Doc Martens on cobble stone streets. The 90's post punk meets dark wave or Gothic rock sound takes my mind there. There is a fair amount of revisionist rock these days and why not, the dark romance of these sounds are perfect escapist soundtracks.

What is quite stunning is Inferno Choir's re-do here, the uptake in cadence and the reconceptualization of what was formerly also darkly romantic but steeped in an almost surf noir meets doo wop punk aesthetic. In my mind, the original "Lost Days" has sonic ghosts of 60's mysterious Western pop noir styles that have seeds in songs like Henry Mancini's "Experiment in Terror" (62), that found it's inspired sound in David Lynch's Twin Peaks and was further twisted by artists like Chris Isaak and Lana Del Rey. I have included the original version's Official Video.

What version do I like the best? They feel like totally different songs. I love them both.

Liner Notes:

Beyond pleasure. Beyond pain. Beyond obsession. Some Days Are Darker invites you to fasten your seat belt for Lost Days, the Inferno Choir Remix. Produced by Robbie Williamson. From the aching depths, where desires are kept. A dark wave dirge for the dance floor. Come take a ride.

From the sun-baked expanse of Phoenix comes a goth rock romance rendered with the fatal attraction of noir cinema and emblematic of the high-contrast coexistence of darkness and light. Elements of post-punk, dark wave, and gloom core.
