"She tries to tell me that she means no harm / Pushing a hot knife / Avoid her eyes but they'll lay you down / It only takes one night..."
The skipping melancholia of "Back Here Again" by Harrisburg, Pennsylvania's The After Hours pushes wistful 80's / 90's post punk atmospheres. The guitar lines, tonally and melodically set against a solid beat and pulsating bass line made me think of an amalgam of Joy Division and Cocteau Twins but this ostensibly recording project and sometimes live band consisting of Jordan Trevino (vocals, guitar, bass, drums), Sean Saman (guitar, bass, keyboards), Elena Rossetto (vocals, bass, keyboards, Percussion) and (for Live performances) Gordon Lauffer (drums), have their own defined sound / aesthetic.
The band shares this about this track, [“Back Here Again” is the song that plays as the main character sprints down the moonlit street. Desperate and determined.] and you can feel this sense of angst, desperation within Trevino's vocal countenance which has a definite 80's drawl, an aloof quality looking inward and gazing at night skies. The inclusion of Elena Rosstto vocal sound juxtaposed as a surprise duet expands the storytelling in a wonderful way. Any way you slice it or describe it, the sound here casts imagery of tussled hair beneath long coats, loose Doc Martens against UK gray skies and I love that.
Run so long run so long
Where're you off to now
Did you forget you were with someone
I bet it comes back around
And will I ever be back here again
When it comes back around
Always knew I'd be back here again
When it comes back
Where're you off to now
Did you forget you were with someone
I bet it comes back around
And will I ever be back here again
When it comes back around
Always knew I'd be back here again
When it comes back
