Dream Nails and the punk hybrid / funk fusion of "Sometimes I Do Get Lonely, Yeah"

"I’m 24 and so bored / Not a misogynist, just skint and listless / Five a side Fridays, out getting pissed..."

Dream Nails might very well hate me for saying this but the rap flung funkiness of "Sometimes I Do Get Lonely, Yeah" had me flashing on a fiery amalgam of artists like Land of Loops, Brazilian Girls, DJ Pooh, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, Tom Tom Club, Bow Wow Wow, Arctic Monkeys and Spice Girls. Yeah, I know my mind works in strange ways, can't help it.

The thing is, and don’t take this the wrong way, okay

But how exactly am I privileged when I’ve got these debts to pay?

And how’s it privileged doing long shifts at Londis

Wondering if my life is ever gonna move beyond this?

I am certainly digging all the subtleties inherent here, the wonderful aesthetics like the drastic, severely artful and jammy bass and drum work (damn, the high hats strikes dig deep), the blistering guitar work that vacillates between preening shiny sounds and palm muted goodness and sort of Jamie Cook vibratone spy caper guitar and the glorious spat out lyrical aesthetic with such an aloof harmony that will literally adhere to your brain.

Sometimes I do get lonely, yeah

Sometimes I do get lonely, yeah

Sometimes I do get lonely, yeah

But I’m used to it // I’m used to it // I’m used to it // I’m used to it

From Dream Nails (bracketed):

[“We didn’t mean to write a rap, it just happened. The verses are meant to be the inner monologue of our protagonist whereas the chorus is outward facing - we imagined that’s when the guy is talking to a friend or a parent and massively playing down his inner turmoil. We’ve all done that - it’s such a normal experience of depression and alienation to pretend to be fine. The sheer understatement ‘sometimes I do get lonely, yeah, but I’m used to it’ belies the magnitude of his growing rage. Melodically we were inspired by the woozy vocals of Mica Levi in that section.” - Guitarist, Anya Pearson (she/her)]

I’m 24 and kissless, worse than any sickness

So yeah I took the red Pill, Plotting with the misfits

Til the day of retribution leaves your liberation pillaged

Sometimes I do get lonely, yeah

But I’m used to it

I’m used to it

The musical constructions, the amazing over the top and seething undercurrent blend of rap / funk / rock / fused and confused could only be created by this distinct punk band.

So, yeah, hopefully Dream Nails gets what I am saying and doesn't hate me too badly. Anyway, I fucking love this song.

London punks Dream Nails have been the subject of considerable excitement in the UK since they first emerged on the DIY scene. Releasing a stream of singles and an EP, they have earned high praise from places like VICE, DAZED, The Guardian, Clash, Nylon and i-D who called the band "the best all-girl punk queertet since Bikini Kill." Noted for their strong emphasis on empowerment from a queer feminist perspective and their involvement in a host of political causes, the band's budding reputation has seen them tour in the UK and Europe with Cherry Glazerr and Anti-Flag, and make three consecutive appearances at Glastonbury all before releasing their first LP. Today the band are announcing their debut self-titled full length, which will be released August 28th by Dine Alone (City & Colour, Alexisonfire, The Chats) in North America and UK indie Alcopop! (Art Brut, Kississippi, Tigercub) for Rest of World.
