"bad at casual, good at being sweet / bad at boundaries, good at going deep..."
Looking at the press photo of Nashville, Tennessee based bad bad luck and I immediately thought, these guys are rascally rabbits indeed, mischievous, full of life and laughter. Then, upon, my first listen to their track "murder me first", from their recently released "Haunted" album, my suspicions were confirmed. Not only is "murder me first" unmitigated rascally-ness, it is saturated in a swaggery cool and badassery. From the onset, the track has a cross generational hard blues rock heaviness with psych rock intentions. It sounds wonderfully woozy, drunk, the unmistakably blues lustful nature of a classic song like "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" by the Beatles and, in fact, I would suggest that there is something late 60's-ish about "murder me first", while I might not be able to exactly define what 'that' is.
Key to this sound, besides the solid pocketed groove, shuffling drum work, rolling thunder guitars is the attitude of all involved as raw rock synergy with queer front woman / guitarist / singer Christina Lee Allbright's voice that has both a snarl and sex appeal offering sassy empowered words. I love the character of Christina's vocal drawl that, for me, encompasses both a punk and western noir aesthetic.
trying to untangle each other?
cuz I'm a bad fucking liar
but I'm a good fucking lover
Asking questions and punchy declarations.
do you wanna be saved?
and do you wanna get buried
in the same damn grave?
I'm good at talking tough
I'm bad at slowing down
I swear I'm gonna fall in love
if it kills me somehow
Christina along with Bear Beggs on guitar, Paul Davis on bass and Colin Schaeffer on drums absolutely kill and I am feeling an amalgam of artists like The Kills, The Band of Skulls, X, The White Stripes (or thereabouts).
