Gorus and the space traveling artful wormholes of "Never Was, Never Will" (Official Video)

"Never Was, Never Will / lullaby gonna' make me ill..."

If you only love to swim in the waters of formulaic pop you might not like "Never Was, Never Will" by Gorus, the moniker of Los Angeles singer-songwriter, artist Ethan Tyrer, but if off kilter dreamscapes excite you, if you like free falls into dark artful places and if curious lyrics full of whimsy (and maybe even non-contextual reasoning) strikes your fancy then you might find Gorus a provocative auteur.

From the onset, the organic guitar strums shoot straight into surreal places bathed in spacey Mellotron-esque tones and a shuffling drum beat that draws me in. Another artistic come on is Tyrer's vocal countenance and while hard to explain, I like his emphasis on drawing out words in unexpected ways, the way he blends in non-lexical singing and, at times (to me) has hints of androgyny to his vocal presence.

From Liner Notes:

"Never Was, Never Will" is the 3rd single from Gorus off the upcoming LP "Future Soul" (April 2024). Taking a step back from the menacing apocalyptic rock of his previous singles, Gorus offers a much more intimate and tender lullaby with this bittersweet "space waltz."

"On this song I was trying to encapsulate the image of a deserted, dead planet, somewhere in the distant future at 'the end of time.' There is a single human left alone on this planet, just waiting around, wondering at the small chance that some familial alien spirits from across the universe will hear his SOS and come to take him home. This song is that character's cry for help being sent out into space."

The song also premiered with a stunning animated music video, created entirely frame by frame by Gorus. "My music is such a visual thing to me. The sounds create a painting in my head. I started making art and later animated videos as a way of showing people what these sound paintings look like to me. I think the combination of these two elements, the sound and the visual, makes for a very potent piece of art."

"ravenous / the sweetest sound / animals come gather round / hear me out, Jupiter! / crying out / gonna get you out..."

I dig what I am hearing. I am swallowing this hallucinogenic pill whole and looking forward to "Future Soul".
