"I just need to lie down / and you're going to lower me in / into a hole in the ground..."
The art rock parade of "big planes (that i'm in)" by Minneapolis, Minnesota's Shrimp Olympics is a stirring rainbow swirl of delight both dark and light. A psychedelic pastiche of sounds that made me think of the iconic earthquake shifts of artists like XTC, The Soft Boys, Elliot Smith, The Beatles, The Feelies, Modest Mouse, Syd Barrett. This track lives inside Shrimp Olympics' 6th Official Album called "feel" and while I felt a sort of Elliot Smith tone within Austin Lombardo's evocative vocals, perusing many other songs on the album I do not. Shrimp Olympics is Lombardo's brain child and teenager. While Lombardo brings on other musicians to cultivate his imaginings, sometimes ID improvising, he is the auteur. All but one song (written with Luca Cherubini) are penned by Lombardo.
"big planes (that i'm in)" is from the onset playful. You can tell that Lombardo loves to play with dissonance or at least pushing against it especially with lead guitar lines. Guitar shapes stair step, shift to half steps (or odd steps). The beauty and sadness feel angular and exquisitely nimble, rushing, everything is rushing. The urgency extends to the emotional weight and the musical breaks feels so cinematic, filmic with 16mm skips and scratches throughout.
I am dipping, diving into other parts of "feel" and smiling.
