Super Cassette and the hopeful sparkling emotional intricacies of "Continent" (Official Video)

"Servitude channeled through / Churning black centrifuge / Swallows you whole / Commodifies your soul..."

The sparkling, nimble intricacies of "Continent" by Oakland's queer fronted, twee, indie rockers Super Cassette is as gorgeous as it is emotionally impactful. The percolations of sound with driving guitars, jamming acoustic piano sounds and pushed bass / drum shuffles, oddly, (or not) made me think of Coldplay while other aspects might feel like 80's /90's indie rock / college radio and I thought of The Waterboys too which might seem to some weirder than the Coldplay reference. In my defense, after checking out more of Super Cassettes varied sonic palette (which I like a lot), in another universe, Super Cassette could have written "The Whole Of The Moon".

LINER NOTES (bracketed):

[Super Cassette's new album Continue? (out Dec. 1) poses the question, “is life worth living?,” through the lens of electro indie-rock at its most danceable and celebratory. Primary songwriter Max Gerlock (they/them) employs the tried-and-true tactic of juxtaposing joyous pop arrangements against dark lyrics, tackling difficult subjects.

Continue? opens with its title track, a guitar driven anthem with arcade-game synthesizers, asking whether modern life as an artist is even worth living. Its grandiose chorus contrasts with lyrics about triumphing over anxiety disorders and suicidal ideations. It’s ultimately a song about not just surviving, but making the conscious decision to thrive.

The album ends with the one-two punch of “Island” into “Continent,” answering the “to be or not to be” question with unequivocal: “yes, but we don’t survive alone.” No person is an island. We’re communal animals who thrive when we support one another.]

Servitude channeled through
Churning black centrifuge
Swallows you whole,
Commodifies your soul

Affinity lures me
Back to humanity
Anchored by empathy
To the bottom of a sacred sea

But we don't face this alone
The parts compose a whole

Hope to delve into "Continue?" as a whole and while it is hard to think that all us humans are somehow connected in deep ways when the world at large can be so tragically fucked up and so many people are hateful, I will try to be hopeful.
