Aaron Hunter Dennis and the ghost filled sublime beauty of "Nobody Knows"

"it's all good / going up as fast as firewood / have some trust / you don't even have to ask / nobody knows you like I do..."

Emblazoned with the wistfulness of youth, the equal parts super human strength and brittle twig fragility of youth, "Nobody Knows" by singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Aaron Hunter Dennis is nearly impossibly to not fall in love with. Constructed of upfront acoustic guitars, synth drones that suggest mellotrons or vintage organs, lovely semi-lo-fi other orchestrations and, most importantly, Aaron's hushed memorable vocal countenance that may make you think of somber ghosts doing a dance around Elliot Smith (miss him forever), "Nobody Knows" has a sort of emotional magnetic resonance that will stick to you. A song that you will come back to often when your emotional barometer dictates that you need to do so.

"Nobody Knows" is the last track from Aaron Hunter Dennis's eponymous EP that just dropped on January 19th (2024). I am not big on cutting and pasting when it comes to my review but found the press info so interesting. It is below (bracketed).

[ After receiving a royalty check for his placement in HBO’s “Shameless”, Aaron Hunter Dennis created a makeshift studio in the Joshua Tree cabin of a friend who had left on tour, and spent the next two weeks recording a collection of songs. In breaks from work he would visit the tavern Pappy and Harriet’s and listen to the stories of locals, about growing up in the 70s, George Van Tassel’s Integratron being on a ley line, and the lore and legends of the Serrano, Cahuilla, Mojave and Chemehuevi people.

Aaron mixed the resulting EP at the Sierra Nevada studio of Paul Kamanski, internationally acclaimed songwriter of the Beat Farmer’s hits “Hollywood Hills” and “Bigger Stones”. Paul’s studio sits atop his property in Walker, California, having literally risen from the ashes after his home was lost to the Mountain View Fire of 2020, not two days after moving in. Prior to evacuation, he and Aaron rushed musical equipment to safety in the steel building that would later become the studio.

A layered and kaleidoscopic collection, at once dreamy and dangerous, like the first wildflowers after a fire, Aaron’s songs manifest the mischievous energies from the places they were created. Be it theories of time travel from a former aircraft mechanic, the mysteries of the chocolate mountains, or chimerical folklore, it was all mixed, literally and figuratively, in Aaron’s mind as he evacuated the flames beside the West Walker River, and followed a thirty head herd of deer to safety.]

Be well, be safe and always try to do the right thing.
