"I hear the Thunder crying. All black and purple crying / My Sun is shining inside. My Birth is biding its time / Waves of emotion crush me. Stars of devotion flashing / Blissful encounters fill me. I know what it is me to be..."
"The Accident" by Melbourne, Australia alt pop / avant rock duo Milk Bar Gang feels like a dark mystery, maybe a David Lynch diorama if he was into proto punk with melancholy two tone sonics. The 80 grit guitar shapes like an upside down nursery rhyme, the clanging drones of sound that at times had me hearing police sirens in the background, the shuffling drums that give a solid groove but somehow feels unsteady and the winding hallucinogenic bass lines, all courtesy of Felix Chapple, forms a diatomaceous bed for Bianca Cao's complexly dreamy vocal countenance.
Just a mere taste of the lyrics might cast imagery in your head. Maybe hands wiping away soil, maybe late 70's late night punk and beatniks hanging a non-descript music venue playing punk and reggae. Figures against sunsets, the characters of untold stories.
Smeared with the dirt
Of hundreds of years
Of virtue and murder
How do I explain?
When pure chance begot me
It almost forgot me
Here lies the truth
Exhume it sometime.
The Accident of your life
Well welcome to the world of tragedy
The Accident of your life
Why sit so still? There is no waiting room
Of virtue and murder
How do I explain?
When pure chance begot me
It almost forgot me
Here lies the truth
Exhume it sometime.
The Accident of your life
Well welcome to the world of tragedy
The Accident of your life
Why sit so still? There is no waiting room
Liner notes share that:
"The Accident perhaps eludes to the chance of birth but best let the music and words speak for themselves. Moments of unsettling melody and chord changes serve to disturb and enchant. The tone of the song is at once bleak and beautiful."
And I couldn't agree more. As I listen while following the lyrics on Milk Bar Gang's Bandcamp I am trying to read between the lines.
