The Midland Affair and the dark alternative cinema of "Be Kind, Please Rewind"

 

"I don't wanna know anymore / I just want my brain back to the place / where it was before..."

The swelling sad darkness of "Be Kind, Please Rewind" by 3 piece Texas based alt rock The Midland Affair is from the onset a tumultuous, dirty, noisy rocker. A constant sort of cinematic build up of dread, a beautiful evocative dread but dread just the same. I love the pod twist of feedback, the choppy crunches pushed by a plodding dead man walking beat. I thought of artists like Metz, A Place to Bury Strangers and Tropical Fuck Storm. Amid the toxic noise there are also elegant musical shapes that surprised me in hopeful ways when I first heard them. 

The Midland Affair just formed last year and their debut album, "Genesis" will drop this summer. 

"Be Kind, Please Rewind", for me ultimately feels like a mystery, the beginning of a heavy film that I want to see.
