altre di B and the multi-genre'd contagious fusions of "Merighi"

"I used to rehearse / in front of the mirror / I used to try generic speeches / Suppose -you never know- / you found me on the comedy night stage / I wouldn't want to be caught unprepared..."

The unbridled freeform energy, mayhemic sonic fusion of "Merighi" by artful Italian indie rock outfit Altre di B (aka Altre) is contagious in it's joyful blend of prog, post punk, jangly pop, twee and, fortunately for me (and others) sung in English.

"Suppose -you never know-
you found me on the comedy night stage
I wouldn't want
to be caught unprepared.
I used to rehearse
in front of the mirror"

LINER NOTES:

[Merighi is the first single of Altre's new EP, out in 2024 for WWNBB Collective. Merighi is about an insecure man who rehearse speeches and songs in front of the mirror. And while talking to himself says: before I was an insecure person we had many things in common and maybe I should go back to find myself again.]

I truly love the jazz inflections, the tightly wound synergy and Altre Di B's absolute ability to shift musical gears on a dime. The free wheeling tensions and intentions might leave you breathless and like high school jazz band kids who grew up and discovered old school proto-punk artists like Pavement and Television and more current surfy punk bands like Beach Fossils and Surf Rock is Dead, I am digging the new indie iterations here. Absolutely.

For a band that burst onto the music scene with a do-it-yourself CD containing Panini stickers of Serie B football teams (from which the band's name derives), followed in quick succession by their debut album There's a million better bands (2011), you wouldn't think that the Italian name Altre di B corresponds to an energetic indie rock, contaminated by post-punk, jangle and twee pop, sung in English. And instead for Altre di B (aka Altre), formed as a band in high school, the international vision has always been an artistic prerogative. Thus, combining energy and a strong euphoric dimension, the result is a nervous, surprising and jubilant rock, which has taken the group around Italy, Europe and North America, participating in international festivals such as Primavera Sound, SXSW, Sziget Festival, Mondo NYC, Indie Week Toronto, Ypsigrock, Europavox, LUCFest Taiwan and Iceland Airwaves. With the 2014 album Sport the band landed on television thanks to the video clip featuring the former world champion goalkeeper Dino Zoff: for two seasons Altre di B became the correspondents of the television show Quelli che il calcio supporting their hometown team Bologna Fc. In the meantime, they transformed an old barn in the Bolognese countryside into a rehearsal room, which would be the birthplace of the albums Miranda! (2017) and SDENG (2021), the latter co-produced by Bruno Germano (Iosonouncane) and the Italian-American Label WWNBB Collective (Be Forest, Brothers in Law, a/lpaca, KOKO MOON, Her Skin, Lofi Legs). The barn, which has since become a meeting point for the hardcore punk scene, is still today the place that most inspires Altre di B, working on their new album, out in 2024.
