"I fell straight through you just like a trap door..."
The sharply cut, strident guitar shapes and brooding vocal countenance on "Take Me Back" by Notbrian, the moniker of New Jersey born and bred, New York based singer songwriter Brian DeSousa, tugs at you right away, like your favorite person pulling you to the stage so you don't miss anything. The stripped back aesthetic, throttling smooth bass, shifting drum patterns, striking guitar and that voice works because of the cool atmosphere, the way the driving atmosphere pushes touchstones in your head but DeSousa doesn't stop there, at a bit over 2 minutes he starts layering in more like a tasty cake. From double time bits of electronica and other striking sounds that flood in at the end it is a perfect sonic arc, a well orchestrated narrative. All that and the song kinda makes you want to dance too.

[The title is somewhat ironic -- this song is about recently coming out of a relationship where I fell hopelessly in love, and it robbed me of my independence and will to create (thus the "I'm hoping you don't take me back").]
