Henny Herz and the percolating potion magic of "The Reader"

"Read to me gently, kiss me with words"

The percolating potion magic of "The Reader" by Munich, Germany / Canada based folk artist Henny Herz sweeps down gracefully like a pair of blue jays nest building. The classic guitar picking that seems to rush a bit faster than Henny's beautiful vocal lilt captures you in a reverent way. The sounds that build and Henny's self harmonies feel at once, now and from before, like it could be a folk song from a hundred years ago and every decade since. It is that classic and, in fact, some of the colors in terms of falling voicings made me think of ragtime colors too and some of the musical passages feel classical. This seemingly dreadfully beautiful song might be delivered simply but compositionally runs deep with complex things happening in an effortless way.

"The Reader" is appropriately and lovingly about the comfort of the spoken word from one person to another. A magical way to form impenetrable bonds. I remember reading to my small children and making up stories while playing guitar.

SEE LINER NOTES:

[The world of books is intertwined with the world of dreams and often one merges with the other when we immerse ourselves in a story before going to bed. As a child, we were read to by the soothing voice of dad or mom before the goodnight kiss and "The Reader" wants to remind us of this feeling, a tribute to reading aloud and the comforting security of whispered words.

In the second single from the upcoming album "We All Heal At Night", Henny Herz takes us on a healing journey with her tender voice, accompanied by a fairytale guitar melody, embedded with dreamy violins and a warm blanket of piano (sounds) and double bass: "Read to me gently, kiss me with
words" - gladly on repeat.]

I love how Henny Herz's "The Reader" makes me feel. It is as tactile and special as turning pages in a book and reading to someone you love.

Henny Herz made her debut with “One Day One Room,” a 23-minute video EP that she produced along with Munich’s production crew Hauskonzerte. “Back Into Space,” her first full-length record, was released in October 2019 on Millaphon. On it, she develops different spaces and voices within herself through various influences—folk, soul, and jazz—and languages—English, German, and French. After an inspiring hiatus at the Baltic Sea in 2021, the artist recorded and produced her second album, “Two Colors To Combine,” which will be released by the end of the year.
