la loye and the beautifully drawn melancholia / hope of "everything, everything" (+ Live Performance)

"it's all in my head / creeping up like water / creeping up like sand / I mean everything, everything..."

The orchestral melancholia, pressed paged beauty of "everything, everything" by la loye, the project name of 24 year old Dutch singer songwriter Lieke Heusinkveld, blooms like existential moments of self discovery and swells like tears. Lieke has a hushed vocal countenance that nonetheless holds tons of emotional context within her gentle lilt. Not the quiet before the storm but a simmering blend of self aware sadness, questions, peers into dark places but looking for light. Teetering on beautiful piano chords, delicate guitar shapes and ramping up orchestrations of sound "everything, everything" is pitch perfect in it's unrestrained emotionalism holding up Lieke's vocal melodies allowing her poetry to leave her mouth held up by an embracing assemblage of horns, strings, piano, organ, bass, guitars, rapid fire drums. There are many, many moments here that I love, that gives me chills like when all the fury strips back to reveal a sort of vintage organ sound that simmers alone for a bit.

Lieke shares:

"I’ve always been a big sucker for nostalgia. It sort of sneaks up on me from time to time and it can be such a place of comfort: to revisit your memories over and over. But the past is a fleeting thing in the sense that a certain place or certain people, certain feelings that I would long for no longer exist in the same way they did back when I was younger. And that’s a concept that was so hard for me to let go of. To me, ‘everything, everything’ has now become that place that I can go back to time and time again, knowing it will gladly stay the same."

Amazing, this song gives me chills. A debut album is due out at the end of the summer of 2024.
