"to feel the sun / on my cheek / it's- it's a joy to me..."
The absolutely raw composure, clean dirtiness, and wondering dreaminess of "My Friend" by Bay Area's Christina Trip is a beautiful crushing affair. A blend of sort of 80's / 90's indie rock with heavy bending guitar chords (more distorted than fuzzy), ever shifting, shuffling drum beats and beautiful airy vocals with 2 parts hints of shoegaze and 1 part hints of twee, this song feels so wonderfully crunchy and romance wave-esque. While I might prefer that the vocals felt less buried in the haze (I love to soak in every lyrical syllable) there are so many artful details to revel in. Things like the aforementioned lean into the electric guitar body bends / warbles, and the super cool cymbal work by the drummer (rapping on the bell in interesting ways), the super effective Pixies-ish bass line, the evocative bridge that further highlights lead vocalist / guitarist Christina Busler's compelling vocal countenance and dreamy melodies. The song in it's totality casts very dreamy imagery in my brain.
LINER NOTES:
[Prior to starting Christina's Trip, Christina was in a band called My Friend, and this song was a powerhouse anthem for that project. However in the wake of the pandemic, My Friend broke up, circumstances changed, and friendships became distant—and in that, the song has taken on new life, as a more wistful tune on deep longing.]
